Raised beds

We offer a number of raised bed designs

In addition, we can consult with you on custom designs.

How our raised beds are different...

Sturdy 2x4 construction. Our beds are strong and built to last. The pine used is sourced in the United States and the natural framing materials match garden aesthetics.

Extended life. Corrugated steel sides and treated lower boards allow our beds to withstand the elements and live long lives. The wood framing has minimal soil contact.

Balance of form + function. Our beds perform extremely well. At the same time, they exhibit a simple elegance which enhances the beauty of the plants grown within them.

Integrated fencing. Steel wire arches (trellis) spanning the width of some of our beds protect plants from common pests such as deer. Added chicken wire also can provide protection from animals such as rabbits.

Trellis support. The arches (trellis) also serve as a bed-length trellis system. This allows vining plants to climb and provides a strong support to dangle twine to train tomatoes and other plants.

Season extender. The arches (trellis) also provide a surface that can be covered with plastic. This creates a greenhouse effect that can extend the growing periods for plants during the shoulder seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions...

What forms of payment do you accept?

We require a 50% deposit, which can be paid via check or with a credit card securely via Square, since we build each raised bed specifically for each order. You will receive a confirmation email with more information about this process after your order is submitted.

The remaining balance can be paid at pick-up/delivery via cash, check, or credit card. All credit card payments are subject to a 3.5% Square processing fee. The deposit is non-refundable. All sales are final after pick-up/delivery.

When will my raised bed(s) be available for pick-up/delivery?

Raised beds are typically available seven days after the order is submitted. However, periods of high order volume can lengthen this time. Choosing a pick-up or delivery date will help us identify when you would prefer the raised bed(s). After we receive your order, we will email you regarding our current schedule. Our goal is to get you your raised bed(s) as soon as possible. Note: There is a delivery fee of $50.

Where do you deliver?

We are able to deliver to locations within 50 miles of Duluth Township. All other orders will need to be picked-up. Note: There is a delivery fee of $50.

How long does installation typically take?

We can typically install one raised bed within an hour; two beds within an hour and a half. Installation does NOT include additional services such as landscape fabric installation, soil installation, nor softscaping around the beds. Note: There is an installation fee of $50.

How do I install my own bed(s)?

Watch this video to learn how to install your own raised bed(s). Watch this video to learn how to install the trellis. The only additional steps are to install the legs while leveling the beds, then zip tying the trellis together.

The videos show the installation of a double raised bed. However, the installation of other raised bed designs is similar.

How should I prepare my site for installation?

We recommend killing the grass and/or weeds that will be under your garden bed(s). We discourage using chemicals because the residue will leach into your garden soil. Instead, cover the site with landscaping fabric or cardboard for at least a month. Another option is to use a spade shovel to break the soil apart and disrupt the root systems of the grass/weeds. Some customers install landscape fabric under their raised bed(s) to prevent undesired growth from the existing soil into the garden soil.

How much soil does each bed hold?

Each 34" x 96" x 15" raised bed can hold approximately one cubic yard of soil.

Do you paint or stain the raised bed(s)?

We currently are not painting/staining beds. However, we can recommend paints/stains for you to do so. Doing this can protect the wood and extend the life of the raised bed(s).

What does modular assembly mean?

Unassembled raised beds come in modular pieces (plus, some designs include cattle panel trellis). Each modular piece is one side of the final bed assembly. Customers who pick-up beds will receive their beds in this manner. To assemble, the sides are simply screwed together (hardware provided) and the trellis (if included) is placed into the bed(s). A video tutorial can be found here.

How can I fill the bottom gap on a sloped site?

Raised beds installed on slopes have gaps between the bottom boards of the bed(s) and the soil. Some gaps are significant enough to require skirting, which is additional lumber that prevents garden bed soil from escaping.

Skirting is NOT included in the price of the beds. However, customers can either request a quote for skirting installation, they can install skirting themselves, or they can attempt to contain the soil by placing logs on the soil around the interior perimeter of the bed(s). The logs will slowly breakdown and serve as compost for the garden soil. We can provide logs for a fee; ask us for a quote in the comments section of the order form.

How can I further protect my raised beds from deer?

We have found that deer tend to be leery of entering the space between double beds and of moving beneath the trellis (we can't guarantee that also will be your experience). However, deer might attempt to eat plants protruding beyond the trellis.

If you encounter significant deer pressure, you may want to place welded wire fencing at both ends and attach chicken wire along the sides of the trellis.

We can provide the fencing for an additional cost. If you are interested in us providing (and installing) the fencing, add that request in the comments section of the order form. We will then provide you with a quote for the additional fencing.

Can you build a taller bed?

Yes, we can for an additional fee. The next standard raised bed height is 30". Taller beds are also an option. Submit this order as a Custom Raised Bed Design and also indicate which style of bed (single, double, etc.) is desired. You also need to indicate if you want a false floor (a reinforced, corrugated metal soil base inside the bed(s)). Understand, 30" beds without a false floor will require nearly twice as much soil as a 15" tall bed (a log base is a good option for these beds).

Can I order during the off-season (November thru March)?

We welcome off-season orders. We fill orders first-come, first-serve in the spring, so this is a good way to get your raised bed(s) early in the growing season. We do not provide pick-up nor delivery during the off-season. Submit your order then we will communicate with you regarding the future pick-up/deliver date.
